Is it advisable to delay weaning till baby is 8-9 months old since she is happy with her milk diet?

Most babies digestive and immune systems are equipped to handle basic foods from around 17 weeks. It is not advisable to delay weaning longer than 6 months as up until 6 months breast milk and formula will provide essential nutrients like iron. Just as early weaning can cause allergic reactions, a delay in weaning can also cause your baby's immune system to develop an adverse reaction to food. So unless there is a family history of a particular allergy, it is appropriate to introduce small amounts of say, soya, when baby is around 6-8 months old so that her immune system reacts in the right way and not develop an allergic reaction to the said food.

There are findings suggesting that early weaning could cause allergies in babies, is this true?

This is not true because babies digestive systems are mature enough to cope with basic food after the 16th week or 4th month. There aren't enough findings to suggest that delaying weaning will prevent allergies from happening. Although health authorities are in favor food being introduced only after the 6th month, there is no reason for delayed weaning if you and your doctor feel that your baby is ready to be weaned. Watch out for signs and begin with foods that are ideal at the weaning stage.

What to do if baby rejects food?

Getting the hang of solid food may take some weeks before your baby actually enjoys eating from the bowl. Some babies may take a lot of time to adjust to eating which involves taking food from the spoon, chewing and swallowing (the tongue thrust reflex has to disappear, and it usually does after the 4 th month). You on your part should not give up and try again on another day. Key issue is you have to be relaxed and be prepared to give your baby time to adjust to this change. Also, sometimes your baby may prefer something else to baby rice; try giving him pureed fruit or vegetable.

Do I still need to breastfeed when I begin offering solid food to my baby?

Your baby should continue on formula or breast milk until at least 12 months of age. Weaning foods are first tastes and not proper meals. As her appetite for food grows bigger and she starts to eat more (which tends to occur after she turns one) her milk feeds will lessen and be replaced by proper meals. Till then don't attempt to cut down her milk feeds. Breastfed or bottle-fed baby's milk feeds should be at least 500-600ml per day. Milk feeds should ideally be first thing in the morning, at bedtime and during the day after meals; limit milk feeds between meals.

If my baby keeps reaching out for my food, should I let her taste?

From around 5 months onwards it is alright for baby to try food. The 'worrying' factor is baby's inability to chew so ideally the food offered should be pureed. Also, only age-appropriate foods should be tried. Avoid offering such a young baby foods containing salt, sugar, flavorings and colorings and additives. At this age, it is best to encourage your baby to develop and enjoy the natural taste of foods which are found in fresh fruits and vegetables.

Why is homemade puree better than jar food?

There are several reasons why your baby should be eating more of homemade food and rely less on jar foods. First, the food you prepare at home is healthier because of the fresh ingredients you use which will be devoid of salt, sugar, thickeners and additives. Commercial foods are heated at high temperatures for sterilization purpose and in the process some of the nutrients get destroyed. Home made purees taste better because when prepared at home the natural, innate taste and flavors of fruits, vegetables don't get compromised. Homemade food given now will make the transition to family food much easier.

What is meant by 'puree consistency'?

Purees are thick smooth paste that suits your infant's early feeds. Babies in the early stages will be adjusting from sucking liquids to swallowing solid food, and pureed vegetables or fruits are the ideal in- between foods which are neither too thin like milk nor too lumpy. Pureed texture in the initial stage should preferably be runny and not coarse, and slightly thicker than milk. Smooth and paste-like it can be thin or slightly thicker in consistency (add less water or milk) depending on the stage of feeding and baby's age. Vegetables and meat that are pureed separately and then added to cereals or porridges (at a later stage to bulk up the feed) not only enhances the nutrient value of the food but also enables your baby to savour the taste of individual ingredients instead of mixed flavor of many ingredients.

Is your baby ready for solids - Here is a list of FAQs

Question: Do I have to wait 6 months to wean baby?

Reply  : At present WHO guidelines recommend that babies should be breastfed exclusively until 6 months at least and that weaning should not be any earlier, unless of course if baby shows signs of being ready to wean. At 6 months, your baby's immune system is at that point when the risk of an allergic reaction is lower. Also babies at this stage begin to respond to small amounts of food well. Mainly breast milk or formula on their own is not able to provide iron and other key nutrients which can be obtained from solid foods. Solid foods also enable baby to develop facial and mouth muscles vital for speech development later on. BUT in case you or your family have a history of allergies such as asthma, eczema and the like, delayed weaning decreases the chances of your baby getting these conditions.

Question: How does one start giving baby the first spoon?

 Reply :

Before you give the first spoonful, keep in mind that it is a brand new experience for your baby, in fact a strange one! Both baby and mother should be sitting comfortably. Start when baby is hungry but not very hungry. It can be time-consuming in the beginning and sometimes every session can take up a lot of your time – be patient and don't give up. Give your baby your undivided attention and use encouraging words to get her to eat. Start with small serving sizes of one to two teaspoons and offer more only if baby shows interest. Never force feed, especially if baby is refusing the food. Try again the next day.

Question : When is the best time to introduce new foods to baby?

Reply :

Introduce new foods when your baby is least fussy and you are relaxed. That could be in the middle of the day (lunch time feed) or after her morning nap. When your baby is not too tired or sleepy she is less likely to resist food, let alone try new ones. Minimize distractions as well. Offer half spoonfuls since most of the food will dribble out of her mouth anyway. Give your baby time to learn the new reflex of taking in food from the spoon.

Question : Apart from store-bought cereals what else can I offer to my baby?

 Reply :

Introduce and develop your baby's taste for vegetable and fruit purees, tiny feeds of one food at a time so that you can monitor the reactions. In the early stages fruits and vegetables that do not require cooking such as banana, avocado, papaya, mango etc can be served raw. That way you are giving your baby food with all the vitamins and minerals intact instead of them getting lost during the cooking process.

My Baby has Colic, How Can I Soothe Her?

Colic is a condition that causes pain in your child’s gastrointestinal tract and results in a very fussy baby for up to 3 months and some very exhausted parents.

There is no medical cure for a baby with colic, however, there are a few things parents can do to help soothe their baby’s stomach and make them feel more comfortable.

10 Ways to Soothe a Baby with Colic

Here are 10 ways to help soothe your baby during this not so fun time.

1. Slower, more frequent feedings – Feeding too much, too fast, can increase intestinal gas from the breakdown of excessive lactose, either in mother’s milk or in formula. So, feed your child half as much but twice as often.

2. Colic carries - Lay your child belly side down onto your forearm with your baby’s head in the palm of your hand or the crook of your arm. Lightly press forearm onto baby’s abdomen.

3. Colic dances - The choreography that works best to contain colic is movement in all three plains: up and down, side to side, and forward and backward – essentially, the movement that a baby was used to while in the womb.

4. Baby bends - At the peak of an attack, lay baby face-up on your lap with their legs toward you and their head resting on your knees. Gently pump their legs up and down in a bicycling motion while making a few attention-getting facial expressions.

5. Tummy rolls - While laying a securing hand on baby’s back, drape him tummy-down over a large beach ball and gently roll in a circular motion.

6. Tummy tucks - Place a rolled-up cloth diaper or a warm (not hot) water bottle enclosed in a cloth diaper under baby’s tummy. To further relax a tense tummy, lay baby stomach-down on a cushion with her legs dangling over the edge while rubbing her back. Turn her head to the side so her breathing isn’t obstructed.

7. Tummy touches - With baby lying on her back, picture an upside down “U” over the surface of your baby’s abdomen and using warm massage oil on your hands and kneading baby’s abdomen in a circular motion with your flattened fingers, massage from left to right along the lines of the imaginary “U.”

8. Warm touches - A famous fuss-preventer is a technique call the warm fuzzy: while lying on a bed or the floor, drape baby tummy-to-tummy and skin-to-skin with his ear over dad’s heartbeat. The warmth of your body, plus the rise and fall of your chest, is a proven fussbuster.

9. Lessen outside stimulation - Reduce environmental stimulation. Lower the lights, reduce the noise around the house, and speak or sing softly to your baby.

10. Babywearing - Babies tend to fuss less. We use the term “babywearing” because wearing means more than just picking up a baby and putting her in a carrier when she fusses. It means carrying a baby several hours a day, before baby begins to fuss.

Breastfeeding Set Yourself Up for Success

According to Nancy Mohrbacher, I.B.C.L.C., F.I.L.C.A., a lactation consultant near Chicago and a co-author of Breastfeeding Solutions: Quick Tips for the Most Common Nursing Challenges (New harbinger Publications), it’s help like this that can make all the difference in a woman’s decision—and, ultimately, her ability—to breastfeed. “Moms helping moms—with support, with advice, with hands-on help—is one of the best ways for women to succeed,” she says. Want more tried-and-true ways to guarantee success for yourself? Read on.

1. Hang with new moms “Attend a breastfeeding support group or baby-care class before you have the baby,” Mohrbacher advises. The goal is to spend time with other women who are already breastfeeding so you can not only learn from them, but find that all-important source of support for when your baby arrives. Doing so also helps you to develop what Mohrbacher calls “breastfeeding self-efficacy,” or the belief in your own ability to breastfeed. “Being around other women who are nursing helps you to develop confidence and commitment, which is a very powerful force in helping you to succeed,” she explains. Bring your partner, mother, even your mother-in-law to these groups and classes, as you’ll want them to support your decision to breastfeed. And, of course, keep up with the group once you’re nursing your own baby.

2. Talk to your baby doc Spend time interviewing potential pediatricians while you’re still pregnant—and make sure yours recognizes and supports the importance of breastfeeding. “If a health care provider isn’t completely supportive of your decision to breastfeed, find someone who is,” advises Suzanne Haynes, Ph.D., senior science adviser at the Office on Women’s Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Support from your pediatrician can have a huge effect on your commitment and success. According to a 2003 study, women who received encouragement from their health care clinicians were much less likely to discontinue breastfeeding within the first 12 weeks.

3. Choose where you’ll deliver If you have any options in where you’ll have your baby, aim for a facility with a low Cesarean section rate—preferably less than 20 percent, says midwife Ina May Gaskin, author of Ina May’s Guide to Breastfeeding (Bantam). According to a 2010 Italian study, C-sections are associated with lower rates of breastfeeding in the delivery room as well as exclusive nursing in the immediate postpartum period. (It’s important to start nursing as soon as possible after delivery to help establish a healthy milk supply.)

Even better, deliver at a “Baby-Friendly” hospital or birth center; these facilities have received hard-won distinction for their dedication to breastfeeding. Though only 154 facilities in the U.S. have been given this designation so far, 90 more are in the process of becoming accredited. (Visit babyfriendlyusa.org for more information.)

If you can’t deliver at a Baby-Friendly hospital or birth center, Haynes advises asking potential hospitals for their Perinatal Care core measure set from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. According to Haynes, this report measures the number of mothers who were exclusively breastfeeding at the time of discharge from the hospital. “You want to look for a high percentage,” she says.

4. Insist on late cord clamping Waiting a few minutes to cut the umbilical cord allows the baby to receive more iron-rich placental blood, Gaskin says. This extra boost can help your baby breastfeed more vigorously. “Ask your doctor to wait until the cord stops pulsing before the cord is cut,” she advises.

5. Get semi-horizontal Rather than nursing in the usual sitting-up position, Mohrbacher suggests adopting a semi-reclined position to ease strain. “Recline the hospital bed or place pillows behind your back so your body is completely supported and your shoulders are relaxed, then place the baby belly down, directly on your chest,” she advises. Mohrbacher also notes there will be some trial and error until you find what’s most comfortable for you, and that the position in which you like to watch TV often works best. (For a visual of how to nurse your baby this way, visit fitpregnancy.com/reclinedposition.)

6. Ignore the clock “Focus instead on your baby’s cues and nurse her whenever she wants,” Mohrbacher advises. Common wisdom says that babies will nurse eight to 12 times in 24 hours—but that won’t always be the case. “Babies will often ‘cluster-feed,’ or nurse almost constantly for certain periods of time, and that’s fine,” Mohrbacher adds. “This is how they bring in a healthy milk supply.”

To feed on demand and learn your baby’s cues, you need her to be close to you, so ask that she room-in with you while still in the hospital, rather than in the nursery. Ditto for when you bring her home—keep her close by so you can feed her frequently throughout the day and night.

7. Be a homebody Our society used to view the first several weeks after childbirth as a “lying-in” period, a time when you were expected to lie low, breastfeed and get to know your baby. Unfortunately, that’s often not the case now—but it should be. Rather than worrying about housework and laundry, use that limited time to bond with your baby, shut out the world and nurse, nurse, nurse. “The first six weeks are a critical window in getting your milk production to where it needs to be,” Mohrbacher says. “Once you get there, you’re golden.”

How to Take Care of a Baby’s Skin

When it comes to newborns and babies, there are so many dos and don’ts that it can be easy to get overwhelmed. Many products claim to be designed for delicate baby skin, but I’m here to tell you that less is definitely more when it comes to this. Keep in mind these special considerations to ensure your baby’s bottom (and everything else) stays soft to the touch:

Babies don’t have a well-developed skin barrier, which leads to three issues.

  1. Ingredients can penetrate their skin easily, so topical medication overdose is possible. Definitely avoid chemical sunscreens and parabens.
  2. Just like skincare ingredients, it’s easy for allergens to penetrate babies’ skin. Though their immune systems are not developed enough to demonstrate an allergy, some doctors believe that exposure to some substances in infancy can lead to increased allergies later in life. This is why essential oils are a no-no for babies, and why it's important to steer clear of fragranced products. Save the baby lotion for yourself!
  3. An underdeveloped skin barrier also means that babies’ skin has a hard time retaining water, making it more prone to dehydration. Paraben-free barrier-repair moisturizers like Atopalm are the way to go.

Cleansing

Many baby products, such as Johnson& Johnson Baby Shampoo, are designed to be gentle on the eyes, but I recommend avoiding any sort of foaming cleanser because it can lead to dryness. Even more, babies don’t need to be washed with soap at every bath unless they’re dirty from a soiled diaper or other mishap. When you do cleanse, don’t use anything stronger than Cetaphil or CeraVe. And it goes without saying that baby skin never needs to be exfoliated.

Sunscreen

Though I advise against sun exposure until the age of 2 and prefer little ones wear sun-protective clothing and hats, it’s important to have sunscreen on hand. Shy away from those with chemical UV-blocking ingredients and look for physical sun protection products that list zinc oxide as the active ingredient. I’ve compiled this list below of baby-safe favorites to make shopping a bit easier.

Omega 6 also works involved in the metabolism and improve symptoms of certain diseases such as attention deficit hyperactivity in children .But if the food is not good pure omega 3 . In place of this fatty acid have side effects that reduce the clotting ability of the body . If you are only feeding pure omega 6 is also not good . Because it just reduces the clotting ability of the body can cause chronic inflammation is not beneficial . That's not to mention the side effects shortage of raw materials and cellular materials for reproductive function .Levels of omega 3 , DHA type should only be under 120mg/ngay . Omega 6 content should be below 250mg/ngay .Equate vegetable fatConfused : vegetable fat was the kind of good and kind and feeding as well as any kind. There is no big difference between them ?Fact: this is very mistaken. Each seed oil have different names , so of course we will have different oil components .The vegetable oil will be different in that : saturated fatty acid , polyunsaturated fatty acid composition of important vitamins come .There are vegetable oils are rich in unsaturated fatty acids , such as sesame oil , corn oil , olive oil , about 80 % are unsaturated fatty acids ( rich in unsaturated fatty acids ) , 12-15 % are saturated fatty acids , peanut oil approximately 75% unsaturated fatty acids , 16-17 % saturated fatty acid , soybean oil is approximately 70 % unsaturated fatty acids , 15 % saturated fatty acid , coconut oil can take 85% of the saturated fatty acid ( inverse ) , and only about 8 % of saturated fatty acids .They also differ in vitamin comes .
